Chemgas operates a complex fleet of gas tankers carrying hazardous materials like ammonia and LPG. They required an intelligent solution to give crew members instant, reliable access to safety-critical procedures stored across a vast, fragmented document management system.
With over fifty QHSE manuals and 1,500 vessel-specific documents, finding precise operational guidance was a slow, manual process. In the high-stakes environment of chemical shipping, any ambiguity or delay in accessing safety procedures represents a genuine risk. The existing third-party system's deep hierarchy made it difficult for crew to quickly verify risks like cargo-to-cargo gassing up procedures.
What SevenLab built
We developed a retrieval-augmented AI assistant that mirrors the entire document corpus into a high-dimension vector store, providing grounded answers in Dutch and English. The system features a multi-layered safety contract, including a cargo-mismatch detector and an LLM-based critic that audits every response against safety protocols before display.

A secondary LLM critic audits every operational answer to ensure strict adherence to source documents.
Hybrid RAG architecture
Combines dense vector search with lexical retrieval to handle both semantic queries and exact procedure-code lookups.
Cargo-aware filtering
A custom detector prevents the system from substituting guidance between different hazardous chemical cargoes.
Automated document synchronisation
A nightly sync process ensures the AI's knowledge base always reflects the latest revisions from the document-control system.
